Avowed Game Director Confirms 60fps for Xbox Series X

Soon-to-release role-playing game (RPG) Avowed is generating excitement among gamers with its promise of smooth gameplay at 60 frames per second (fps). Obsidian Entertainment, the developer behind this highly anticipated title, has confirmed that players on the Xbox Series X will enjoy this elevated frame rate. However, those using the less powerful Xbox Series S might experience a limitation, maxing out at just 30fps.

FPS Performance on Consoles

In a recent interview, Carrie Patel, the game director for Avowed, shed light on the performance capabilities of the game. During her conversation with MinnMax, she stated, “you can get up to [60fps]” specifically on the Xbox Series X. This news has been well-received, especially by owners of the more robust console variants, such as the Xbox Series X Digital Edition.

On the flip side, players on the Xbox Series S will face limitations, with a maximum frame rate capped at 30fps. This disparity raises questions about the game’s performance optimization and whether it can reach the same standards as other titles in the genre. The concerns about achieving 60fps are valid considering similar RPGs, like Starfield, were launched at 30fps.

Gameplay and Optimization

Performance issues have come up in discussions surrounding Avowed, particularly from previous previews that highlighted some glaring flaws even on high-end gaming rigs. Nevertheless, the potential for a 60fps mode on consoles indicates significant optimization improvements made by the development team. Gamers are hopeful that these enhancements will extend to the PC version as well.

During an earlier interview with Patel and senior gameplay engineer Gabriel Paramo, they indicated that the team had dedicated substantial effort towards improving the overall combat experience. Notably, combat mechanics are fundamental in any RPG, and the feedback from earlier builds suggests that Avowed‘s combat is shaping up to be polished and engaging. Patel also mentioned that the game’s scope would be similar in terms of “length and breadth” to that of The Outer Worlds, another beloved title from Obsidian.

Setting and Narrative

Avowed is set in the rich universe of Pillars of Eternity, where players assume the role of an envoy for the Aedyran emperor. Tasked with confronting the Dreamscourge, a devastating plague threatening the realm, players will navigate through the dangerous expanse known as The Living Lands. This narrative setup promises an engaging mix of adventure, exploration, and intricate storytelling, hallmarks of Obsidian’s design philosophy.

As a fantasy RPG, Avowed draws comparisons to past successes like Fallout New Vegas and The Outer Worlds, suggesting that fans can expect a compelling fusion of narrative depth and player choice. The immersive world-building combined with the pressing threat of the Dreamscourge creates a compelling backdrop for adventures ahead, inviting players to immerse themselves in a tale filled with challenges and rich lore.

Release Details

Mark your calendars, as Avowed is set to launch on February 18 across platforms including Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. For enthusiasts eager to dive into the action sooner, the Premium Edition allows for up to five days of early access, making it available from February 13. This launch window is poised to attract gamers keen on exploring the stunning world built by Obsidian.

As anticipation builds towards its release, Avowed stands as a beacon for RPG enthusiasts, eager to explore a vibrant world filled with quests, character development, and a gripping story that holds promise for both casual and hardcore gamers alike.
